i currently use royal purple synthetic 10w 30 on my 87 5.0 before i even get to 2500 miles my oil level is about a quart short. i drive normally and occationally go WOT. i heard that if you tend to go WOT all the time, basically have a heavy right foot that the correct oil to use on 5.0 is a 20w or a thicker oil. is this true and if not what could be the problem. mileage is only 67k thanks

That sounds fairly normal for a 5.0 w/ some miles. The thicker oil will slow it done some, but 5.0's use oil due to the forged pistons combined w/ light tension oil rings from the factory. Not to mention a PCV system that likes to suck the oil into the intake.

im a lube technitian, so oil changes is my life (unfortunally) on a 5.0 i wouldnt use any thicker than 10-30, 10-30 is thick enough for california weather, anything thicker, might give you some problems to start the car when is cold...
