Hey I recently got interested in 5.0s hatchbacks, the ol 302. I was wondering what the difference is between a LX and a GT. I heard that although they may share the same 5.0 the LX is faster due to weight(?) Why is this, and what does the GT have that the LX does not? Which would you guys prefer, a 5.0 LX or GT? Thanks.. I'm looking to buy one VERY soon

If the LX was originally a 5.0, all of the drivetrain and suspension parts are the same. The LX is somewhat lighter, since it lacks the side skirts and has a smaller bumper cover front and rear. No factory foglights either. Most 5.0's are GT's, the 5.0 LX is less common.

Is that true? LX's are less common? Hmm learned something new today.

another difference are the cheese grater tail lights and spoiler.

I dont know where that info was obtained but I would say there are ALOT more LX cars out there than there are GT's.

The cars are indentical except for the body kit.Same HP,same drivetrain etc...The weight difference is very nominal when comparing GT/LX hatchback models. Now the coupes, they can be damn light

My info regarding 5.0's came from the May issue of Muscle Mustangs/Fast Fords. For most years between 88-93, there were 2 to 3 GT's sold for every 5.0 LX. For example, in 1989, there were 24,734 5.0 LX hatches sold, but 40,231 GT hatches.
In 1988, 9,642 LX 5.0 hatches sold, but 37,056 GT hatches.
I imagine that there were more LXs sold overall, but I was speaking about 5.0s only.

Definetly gonna hunt for a LX 5.0. Can you guys help me with any problem areas I can look out for? I know every car has a specific problem area i.e Subaru SVXs= wheel bearing, tranny. Although I dont know what problem areas are common for a 5.0. Thanks alot guys, everyone has been a big help to me.

Weak alternators
Faulty TFI modules
Weak trannies
Red Interiors
Leaky Heater Cores
Broken ash tray door
Broken arm rest lid
I'd buy an 89-93
If you want an air bag get a 90-93

I've not had a ton of problems with mine (KNOCK ON WOOD)so there may be other issues people have experianced on a regular basis.

Don't forget the "gangsta lean", the broken seatback on the right of the driver's seat. Seems like half of the Mustangs I've looked at had that problem. I'm wondering if that's seen more on 5 speeds-maybe from yanking 2nd and 4th gear hard?

Add to that, leaking power steering rack.

The leaky heater core issue is a real PITA.
It is like $600 in labor (shop rate) to have one replaced. If the heater doesn't work it is a good bet the core was leaking and they bypassed it. Another way to tell is turn on the defrost and make check to see if the windshield fogs up.

You should also do a Carfax report and make sure the title is not salvaged.

Make sure the owner smogs the car before you buy it (which is his legal responsibility). A lot of people disconnect the smog equipment, have performance mods that won't pass visual, or have cats that are shot. You could be in for some serious $$$ if you have to deal with smog issues.

There are probably a few more things that I am missing.

Yea one big one!
Cracking on the floor board.
Look around the seat aera.
And rear control arm aera.
Pull the rear seat and look for cracks as well.
Just a heads-up.
All in All they are great cars for the money.
I have had 7 so far and would never think twice about jumping in any one of them and going state to state.

brakes are jacked up on a lot of 5.0's, spongy pedel, etc. also the e-brake hardly works or needs to be pulled nearly straight up to grab (easy fix, adjust the adjusters at the drums).

wavy or dented roofs, also the "foxbody lean" where the drivers side will sit lower than the passenger. and oil leaks, mainly the rear main seal. clutch cable problems are pretty common, and the window/lock switches die often
