While you can mount some of them on smaller 8.5 rims you don't get the sidewall strength that they're designed for.<br /><br />Realistically (from experience... with this same issue), the biggest I'd run on a 17x8 is a 255/45/17. Most 255/40/17's and everything bigger seems to suggest 8.5" as minimum rim width.<br /><br />I have 275/40's on my 17x9's and I'm right at the limit of minimum rim size. If you oversize your tires you'll get lots of sidewall flex in corners and unpredictable handling. Tire rack gives specs for all the tires they sell.
