What wheels and tires do you have? I looked at some 17x10s and wanted a 315 tire for them but was unable to find one. send me a pic of your car if you have one I would like to see what it looks like now.

I had 285/40/17 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s on a set of 03 Cobra wheels... Not to mention the 305/315/325, etc...

I wouldn't go bigger than 245's on an 8" wheel, 275's are just for looks IMO....I had 275's on my 17x8 99 Cobra wheels and the ass end of my car felt like shit....

275's are spec'ed by most manufacturers for 9" rims. While you can mount some of them on smaller 8.5 rims you don't get the sidewall strength that they're designed for.
Realistically (from experience... with this same issue), the biggest I'd run on a 17x8 is a 255/45/17. Most 255/40/17's and everything bigger seems to suggest 8.5" as minimum rim width.
I have 275/40's on my 17x9's and I'm right at the limit of minimum rim size. If you oversize your tires you'll get lots of sidewall flex in corners and unpredictable handling. Tire rack gives specs for all the tires they sell. Check them out.
