In theory, a 4 lug pattern is weaker than a 5 lug pattern because of basic geometry. Think back to when you guys learned about simple angles in high school or college(this may be many years for some of you [Wink] ) A square cannot support the same stresses (were talking torque here) that a triangulated shape can. A square has four 90 degree, right angles in its shape and is weaker because of them. A 5 lug pattern does not have any right angles and is, gemoetrically, a bunch of triangles overlapping each other to make a star. Don't believe me? Look at the sides and underside of a steel bridge the next time you are in a boat. Shit, just drive westbound accross the bay bridge for that matter... Notice all the triangles? My point exactly. Engineering at its best.

The 5 lug pattern is stronger.

You can do it a few different ways:

Ranger axles and drums in rear, Mark 7 rotors in front...very limited wheel selection

also, you can use 94 or 95 mustang spindle, rotors, calipers and get SN95 ball joints in the front. Do ranger axles in rear, or SN95 rear end.

Hope this helps [patriot]

I just did an install on a 91 5.0 with customer supplied parts. The guy bought brand new axles and drums from Ford Racing, and the switch was a very easy and foolproof way to convert to 5 lug. On the front end, DO NOT use F6 or later spindles, only 94-95 spindles, as stated earlier. The later spindles stick the wheels out too far and they hit the fenders, even if you roll the lips.

In regards to the advantage of 5 over 4 lugs, not only is there a strength advantage, 4 lug cars just look weak. Case in point, the early 6 cylinder Mustangs were 4 lug.

I seriously doubt ANY of you are even REMOTELY putting enough power down to warrant 5 lug. Not even close. If you want the looks, great...go for it. If you want it for more wheel choices, go for it. But to say it is "better" is [BS flag] . I broke a axle in my Cobra before the lugs broke.
And my 4 lug looks just fine with the Welds and stock 93 Cobras, but I guess my car is "weak" for having them.

To answer your question, go to PNP and get two Ranger axles and drums from a 2wd truck. Then go over to the first Mark 7 you find and pull the rotors. If your car was/is a 4cyl, you can use the rotors off the Ranger as well...due to the spindles being different from V8s to 4cyl's.

yes your car is weak [Razz]

4 lug has supported well over 1200hp, very few actually need 5 lug, i went to 5 lug for wheel choices and brake choices, strange doesnt have drag brakes for 4 lug (i dont think anyway?)

even though my car only makes 300hp to the ground, when i did my five lug swap in the rear i noticed all of my 4 lugs were bent on the rear pasanger side. I was sporting the 93 cobras and im glad i switched em to 5 lug. It definatly makes your ride stronger! 4 lug guys check you lugs for straightness bet there are some that are outa line.

The reason I did the 5lug conversion was because I wanted 4 wheel discs.
