Either the starter is bad, I.E. the bushings are worn out and the ?commutator? is binding when you turn it. It happens, when the starter's cold it will work fine. Then it warms up and leaves you stranded.

Or, your cables are crapped out.

The last bad starter I had welded the starter solenoid together and cooked the positive cable.

A little find recently, is that autozone is selling 2 guage generic battery cables that work great. Cheap enough to replace them and the starter at the same time.

Sounds like your starter is going bad. Do you have long tube headers? I would double check your ground connection too.

I can almost guarantee that its your starter...almost. I had exact same prob it cause once ur motor is hot it takes more for the starter to crank it over. Just make sure its not the solenoid, batt. cables, or batt. To test the solenoid just jump the current past solenoid right to the starter..your haynes assuming u got one, will tell u step by step how to jumper them. [burnout]

If by "brand new" you mean Kragens, don't be suprised if it's a turd. As I said, if the starter only binds when it's hot, their rebuild gremlins would think it's fine, spray paint it and ship it!

if your negative battery cable is smoking, replace it something is wrong with that cable or something is wrong in that area. I bet you have a bad ground and thats why your car won't start. It'll start cold because the car hasn't moved for a while and made a stronger connection and then when you drive it the connection is lost.

also, use some dielectric (sp?) on all of the electrical connections. It produces better connectivity.

Yup, I would try the simplest stuff 1st before replacing the starter. Replace the ground cable and check the connection at the starter and the relay.

Are your headers long tubes or shorties? If they are long tubes I have heard of problems with heat soak.

If i saw my negative cable smoking i wouldn't even try starting the car until i replaced it and if i was somewhere i'd have it towed home i 'm not going to risk having my car catch on fire and burn to the ground.
