I have a 5.0 that has like a quiet ticking around the driver's side vavle cover. It doesn't sound like anythibg is tapping against the valve cover, just a ticking sound that ticks faster with rpm. I've already checked for for exhaust leak and pinging but its not that. Would this be the sound of a bad lifter or something else?

Normally the hydrualic lifters on a 5.0 get clogged...They have a small oil hole in the center bore...

Try some "lifter" oil additives...I've tried a CD2 lifter oil additive and it worked ok, until my next oil change...

Depending on how many miles are on your engine, it might be better to just replace you lifters
....

Would it be better to remove the lifters, take them apart and clean them by hand? Is that possible?
