Alright, here goes. I got burned BAD on a trade with "foxbody" - Steve in San Jose. Traded a MAC plasma cutter (damn near new) for what was supposed to be a 26 k rebuilt 5.0L w/ all of the accessories on it out of a wrecked 90 Stang. Took the engine apart today (picked it up on Saturday) and the damn thing has been punched out .040 over with evidence of heavy scarring in the cyl's - all of them. The top of the pistons were caked in burned oil (severe consumption problem) and the heads were pretty much the same. My question is, what are acceptible bore diameter #'s for a 5.0L - I can get pistons and rings for as much as a .050 bore job, but that's a little excessive I think. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If they are scored that bad, I seriously doubt .050 over is gonna clean it up.
Find another block and use the existing pistons if they are decent. Sucks to hear you got the shaft! [Frown]

Yeah the 5.0 block has pretty thin walls so i wouldnt go more than .040 over.

Notch1320 has had a core 302 on the board for some time. I think he was only asking $50~

91PONY's stock block is punched .050 over. I sonic checked the block at key points on each cylinder & could have easily gone .060 over. (actually .070 was not out of the question)
For those concerned with Head gasket sealing, consider this....stock Ford HG's have a 4.100 inch bore. Same with most of the aftermarket HG's.

4.050 is a common bore & several OTS pistons are avialable.

Used blocks are also easy to come by.

I went .060 over on the 351 in my Bronco. No problems yet.

Also, that a tough lesson learned on buying a used motor. Always do a compression check and take the heads off before agreeing to buy a used motor.
