does anyone know why i went through two adjustable clutch cables? are they known to go bad?

what happened to them? I had one burn on the header and it was ruined, but it would have been fine if it never touched the header...

Because most of them are made overseas and are not as strong as the OEM cables. I would get an OEM cable and a firewall adjuster, that should give you plenty of adjustability.
