Hi all,
After failing my test-only station smog, I did a bit of research, and found that BAR will pay up to $500 in repairs to fix the problem! Sounds almost too good to be true, but I have yet to find a catch...
http://www.smogcentral.com/HTML/cap.htm
"California offers income eligible motorists and Test-Only directed vehicles up to $500 in free smog repairs if their car fails a smog test. Restrictions do apply, here's the scoop.
To qualify, your vehicle:
Must have failed a "biennial" (every other year) Smog Check. Aborted, manual mode and training mode tests do not qualify. Must not have a "tampered" emission control system. Must not be in the process of being sold, or in the process of being registered in California for the first time. Must not be registered to a non-profit organization or business. "
Regards, Chris.

To qualify you have to make no more than $16,613 per year (single person in household)
Good to know but there always seems to be a catch when it comes to emissions

The income requirement doesn't apply if you were specifically sent to a test-only station! Thats the trick to this whole thing...
Now, I'm not sure exactly _who_ gets sent to a test-only station - I was because my car is a "high-emitter profile", and perhaps because I was sent to a referee last time I was smogged. I know there is a random selection too (2%?).

thats only to be eligable for the repairs by income, the other way the requirements are quoted in the first post.
I looked into this but it didn't apply to me because I'm transfering the title from someone else to me with the required smog, just happens to be test only because its a gross polluter

Ahhhhhhh thanks for pointing this out. My A.D.D. was kickin' in so I didn't read the whole thing
I know someone who just spent $600 to fix their car to get it to pass test only. The cost of repairs is getting out of hand.
I have heard that the test only thing is random. I know a couple of people who have always had clean smogs and have come up test only. Anyone else know anything about this? [ February 09, 2005, 04:23 PM: Message edited by: 92stangLX ]

I had to go to a "test only" this past December. At first I couldn't understand why I had to take it there since this was only the 2nd time the car needed a smog(it's a 98) and the first time it passed with flying colors. I was told by the station I took it to that it was a completely random thing. I think that's
My neighbor works at an Arco station and he was going to do it for alot less than the $90 I had to pay. Maybe it's just another way for the state to get more money.
