Hi,
I have a 1989 LX 5.0. When I start up the car after it has been sitting for awhile, it seems to stumble. Occasionally, it stalls. However, after the car warms up, it seems to run fine. I've noticed that the exhaust smells like gasoline. The "Check Engine" light does not go off (it does work). I have a fair idea of what the culprit may be, but I want to be sure that I am not ignoring other possibilities. Thanks for your assistance.

Keep in mind - it's supposed to run rich when it's cold - however a car that runs rich usually doesn't stumble and it idles high.
What does idle rough and smells like gas is lean. Lean causes misfires which result in unburnt gas in the exhaust.

Had a similar problem with my 92 LX I changed the idle air by-pass sensor mounted on the throttle body and that solved the cold idle problem.
