i believe the gearing is different. My friend blew the tranny up in his 89 so i gave him my 92 and his speedo was way off after installing it.

First gear is lower geared before 91 t5's,91 they started using the Heavy duty T5 "worldclass" and the first and second gear are closer together. The shaft where the throwout bearing slides back and forth was aluminum on the pre 91 t5's and would wear over time causing the clutch to hang up on the lip that was created. This happened to me in my 65 on an early t5,I had to have it sanded smooth, but then the tranny blew the syncros so i just upgraded to the 91 wc t5. this throw out bearing shaft was upgraded to steel in the 91's. There is a couple other differences but i can't remember.
