I'm lookin to buy some GOOD quality heads that will last and give me great performance. My engine is all stock thought...what brand/type should I go with? I didn't want to buy something my engine can't handle. Thanks!

save your money and just pick up a used set of GT40's. Should be around $400 complete.

So you wouldn't suggest some AFR's or Victor Jr.'s? I was thinkin of the used GT40 thing...but I just thought if I do it Imma do it right. I dunno how well GT40's would perform....would I notice a big difference?

victor jr's are way to much head for that motor.afr is a great head as are the edelbrock heads.I use the edelbrock 5.0's on mild combos and they work great and they are very reasonably priced.

if you go overboard on the heads you will need a lot of support equipment to go with them:
injectors AFPR maf TB/EGR spacer intake rockers pushrods possibly want to change the cam as well

You need to ask yourself a question first, and that would be if you think you might go with a stroker kit later on, like maybe in a year or something. The thing you don't want to do is go and buy some performer heads and then go with a stroker in 9 months and say "shit man wish I got the jr's!" You can got with the bigger heads like AFR185's of Vic Jr's on a 302 its just you are not gona see as much of an improvement over a 165 or a Performer head. It will still run strong with the bigger heads you will just have the room to grow to a 331 or 347 in the future with out buying new heads.

AFR 165s, and if you do upgrade your motor later just have some porting done. 165s will work fine on a stroker motor.

would the afr 185's be too much head for the stock motor???

Yes, the 185s are too much head for a stock motor, UNLESS you put it a big cam and intake and rev it to like 6500rpm. Then they would make good power, but you will lose a lot of low end torque. You can get 165s and then have the intake runners ported later because the exhaust ports are the same on the 165 and 185 heads.

Yes, I plan on droppin in a 331 within the next year. I didn't want to get something that will screw up my stock motor, but I did want something that will work great for the 331 and work well with the stock motor. Also want it to be smog legal. I've been recommended to AFR numerous times. I'm still doin my research on the different types of heads n stuff. So you would say AFR 165 and that wouldn't jack up my stock motor?

if a 331 is realistically in the cards, just get the AFR-185s or something like TFS Hi-ports or a similar head now rather than later.

Yeah, 165s arent enough head if you want to have an agressive all motor 331 in my opinion

Is it possible for a 331 with those heads to pass smog?

Yes 185s can pass smog, they do make a smog legal version. A 331 is not technically pass smog, but no one will no whats in the block. Basically passing smog is mostly in the cam, and your tune as long as you can get someone that looks over the visual stuff you can usually get most combos to pass the sniffer. The setup in my sig passed the sniffer with flying colors, but its quite a bit milder than what your planning

*shameless plug* i'll sell you my TFS twisted wedge heads, new springs, all new valves, new 3angle valve job, fresh back from tfs with less than 1000 miles. ported to flow 300cfm@.700 lift intake, 230 exhaust. had them on my 302 but with those flow numbers would work awesome on a 331/347.

What do they flow at .5 and .6?

forgot, they're also o-ringed, and not 230ex. cfm, it's 270cfm.
fasterdamnit, don't know any of the other flow #s, all i remember is the max flow off of the bench testing. if seat of the pants is any indicator, it feels like they got a lotta lift under the curve, because i was running the tfs stage 1 (only .499 lift w/ 1.6 rockers), and it definitely pulled.
thanks phil
