I have a set of BBK long tubes sitting in the garage and I have been told shoties and equal legnths will make your cobra loose power but Long tubes and a good cat back you can gain up to 35HP.
I have a new engine going in the cobra this week, is it worth having them put the long tubes back on?

Just put the long tubes on. Or sell them and get mid-legnths.

long tubes are very beneficial for the 4v 4.6's...I wouldn't install anything BBK though, but if you do use the original Ford hardware...

BBK longtubes are pretty good, at least for the 4V they are. Mac long tubes cause severe oil burning.

I see I have a lot of fans over here. You don't have to listen to my advice, all I have to say is that I know a lot more about affects of mods for a 4.6 dohc than most of you.

It's really real.

I gotta admit I am sceptical of the oil burnig theory, but you backed up your claim and that's always welcome on tech talk...That's what we're all here for, TO LEARN!...

This makes more sense than the "scavenging oil past the valves" theory:
quote: Originally posted by Fourcam330 Mike, I remember hearing the scavenging theory, but I think the real reason was excess welding material coming loose and being recycled through the motor via the EGR. In any case, I'll never put a MAC product on anything I own.

I have a 5.0, not a 4.6 but I had MAC LTs, MAC o/r H, and MAC cat-back and didn't have any oiling problems.
Maybe this is just more proof Ford should dump the 4.6 and go back to the 5.0?

I don't think so, Ford is never going back to pushrods.

I had a set of Mac long tubes and I never had any problem with "burning oil" The only thing I never liked about them was the fact that the flanges were all seperated witch made the install that much more of a PITA. Other wise they were pretty good products, and now I have BBK and have no problems with them either, you just have to do some cleaning on the inside of the primareis.

i think its a pretty wierd situation that this only applies to MAC headers and DOHC motors. the theory that MAC headers work so well that they pull oil through the valve seals is BS. the theory that the metal slag comes loose and recirculates causing ring and cylinder wall wear cant be true because none of us have heard about this issue with all the other applications that MAC makes headers for. i've used MAC headers and they actually look very clean and have little excess welding. maybe this happens with defective headers that have leaks and DOHC engines are more sensitive to bad leaks leading to burnt exhaust valves?
