have you tried putting it into 4th, then reverse before backing up?

also, I know first has a lockout unless you are stopped or going very slow, but you didn't really describe what is happening [Smile]

thanks, i'll try going into 4th, then reverse. when i go into reverse, the gears often grind and/or slip out.

anyone know if this is covered in the extended warranty?

thanks

What type of warranty is it? If you bought a Ford ESP contract, it depends on what level of contract you purchased. Most of the Ford contracts will cover internal trans problems, but nothing clutch related. If you bought an aftermarket policy like INDS/Transcon, Western General, MBPI, etc. you might be covered also, but they are bastards to deal with. Get ready to fight with them if that's the case.

If you think it is a Ford dealership extened service plan call the service department and give them your Vin# and they can run it to determine the coverage on the vehicle. The Factory warranty has expired as it is only 3 years or 36k

Hope this helps! [burnout]

I have the Ford extended service warranty which covers transmission. Is the reverse grinding a transmission problem, cluth problem, or both?

thanks again

it is not a problem at all IMO. Shift to 4th, then move it to reverse and it wont grind.

90% of the time grinding when entering a gear is a clutch related problem.

the other 10% is the synchro for that gear will be bad, but AFAIK there are no synchro's for reverse, hence why you need to shift to 4th (which has a synchro) that accelerates the gears in the transmission to match the speed of the engine before shifting into reverse.

I've tried the 4th gear first. In fact I've tried all the different gears first to see if any work and none work consistantly. Does it work for you 100% of the time or usually?
