ok so the problem is i have the 180 BHP CFI engine in my 85 LX vert. im doing an emmisions legal cam so i can still pass smog and throwing some 1.7 roller rockers on it too. it already has a K&N and exhaust which makes it kinda fast but i gave up an 11 second VW for this car and now im starting to regret it. what can i do for more power?? can i swap the CFI out for the better SEFI?? will it require alot of work?? what about heads? would it just be better to rip out everything (engine/tranny) and throw in a 347 with a 5 speed? yea that would be nice but im on a really tight budget here. my friend is going to give me fuel rails and upper/lower intake with throttle body. so what the hell should i do?

Why the hell did you trade for an 85 if you knew the hassles? I won't even look for any 5.0 older than an '88.
Tight budget = rip out an E7 longblock, port heads and intake, small cam, nitrous kit. Done.

If you change to late-model EFI, you're going to have to swap harnesses. Best course would be a new CFI set up for squeeze and alot of it. I wouldn't even waste time with a cam/head swap.

I'd go carb. You're closer than you think, since the '85 5-speed cars came that way. I'd say it would ne a bunch more work to go SEFI. Wiring, Fuel lines, computer. The 85 heads are the same as the 87 and later so, I wouldn't do anything unless you can afford different heads. Put a 50-100 shot on it for good measure... Dennis

you can't spray that car....well not that you can't...but no one makes a kit for it. it's an aod right? so it has the cfi....my buddy tried to get a kit from NOS and wanted to hit him up for like 2 grand. i would go the carb swap, add the heads and juice. should run pretty well.
