I wanted to see everyone's opinion on their experience with this combo as far as cam choice. 302 with factory heads, aftermarket intake, and all the bolts on's. Doesn't need to pass smog either. Also how the cam was set up, straight up, retarded or advanced. Thanks for input

Why?
The stock heads suck. Loudly.
Yes, It will have more power than the stock cam. But doing all that work and not changing the heads seems like a lot of work for minor gains.
So- for the restrictive stockers- Comp Cams XE266 hydraulic roller, installed dot-to-dot. Maximize the torque up to 5k.

I agree, the stockers leave a lot to be desired. I'm just curious because a lot of people have the time to do the cam swap but not the money to pay for high dollar heads. Thanks for the input. [ July 17, 2004, 12:44 AM: Message edited by: mtbaughs ]

Camara90's car had stock E7's with the thermactor bump removed with RPM edelbrock, TFS 1 cam installed 112 ICL, 1.7 rockers, bbk longtubes, 75mm tb, 75mm maf etc. It ran 13.00 at 106.6 on it's only motor pass down the track with a 1.93 60' on DR's. I'm sure he could have gotten some 107's with some tuning and shift points experiments. Track weight was 3400-3450 lbs.
For restrictive setups you need overlap and aggressive lobes. For the right fit you need a custom. Not many off shelvers have a tight LSA (below 110) and the combination of the right lobes for intake/exhaust. For a setup like this I think duration in the 224 range (single pattern) on a 108LSA with a 110 ICL would run pretty damn good for what it is.

I'll go out on a limb & say Aaron is recomending this cam: Comp280HR 224/224 110LSA .560/.560 w/1.6's Installed on a 109-110ICL when used with an off-road exhaust. Also using a shorter runner intake like an RPM....although a performer should work nearly as well.
You'll need to install valvesprings/retainers that have 125-140lbs seat & 300+lbs at .550 lobe lift. Stick with a single spring or you'll have to cut the spring seats on the heads. Also check piston to valve as it will be close. Keep it on a 109-111ICL & it should clear.

uhh?
factory stock longblock cars run 104mph in the 1/4 quite often.
I just read an article in MM&FF from a few years ago where a guy in the "factory stock" class with an `87 notch ran a 12.94 @ 106.x mph, consistantly.
stock cam's rule. [ July 17, 2004, 10:31 PM: Message edited by: blind ]

stock cam's rule.
Ever check out the cost of one of those stock class motors? And the "stock" cam was probabbly chosen from dozens (or more) candidates on a Cam Doctor.

most I've ever heard of for a cam gain on a stock 9:1 302 in the 6250 rpm range and below is about 12 rwhp, so figure that was 1-2 mph over whatever the combo would do with a stock cam.
extend the rev limiter or go carb and all bets are off, IMHO, probably much more to gain then.
It does seem a lot of fuss, but then again most of us rave about the gain from swapping out the stock headers, which is maybe 1 mph or so anyways. In that context it's a pretty good bolt-on.
