So I was making a right turn after the off ramp and got on it while in second gear. Pulled hard then i hear a big CLANK... or maybe it was a CLUNK... maybe a pop? I got off the gas and then It started to make the repetative noise it's really annoying, not too ugly, but it's hard to explain. I dont' have time right now to expect so I'm just looking for some ideas.
Lets see, the car still moves, forward and back. drives smoothly minus the noise that it makes... goes into gears smoothly, and honestly this is some shitty info. It felt like the driveshaft popped or something connected to it. It's not the engine.
yea it was definitely a *POP*. [ July 08, 2004, 07:46 PM: Message edited by: 87 Saleen ]

Does it make the noise while the car is sitting still idling?....
If it does it only while idling it's something on the motor or input shaft on the trany...
If it does it only while driving it's something to do with the rest of the drivetrain....

only while driving - tranny's input shaft, throw out bearing/retainer?

could be the clutch fork flapping?
Mine used to do that when my clutch cable was giving me problems, it was like a metallic tapping sound, it seldom happened at idle but when it did I could actually see the clutch fork flapping, easy fix.
when the nut on my clutch cable flew off it happened with a really loud bang, once it did it when I hit the pedal, and another time when I was going WOT up a hill in 4th gear..luckily I made it back down the other side of the hill and rolled into a gas station lol... Can you shift it into all forward gears? If not, broken/bent shift fork inside the tranny. Also, check your tranny mount and u-joints.

I figured it out, it's the rearend.
i disconnected the drive shaft hoping a seal had gone bad and found out that it's difficult to turn the rear tires manually. It clanks and they move in clicks... I just had this shit rebuilt last year too...
oh yea the bolts from the driveshaft to the rear end were loose and one was practically almost all the way out.
the car still moves, and i know there's some here that know rears very well, so you guys think it's nothing major? maybe just a wheel bearing??? Somehting defitely went pop...

If it's in the rear, it could be these items...
Broken spider gear.. Broken clutch... Broken centering pin and/or retaining bolt.. Broken tooth off the ring gear...
With any of these, do NOT drive the car. You need to have it looked at first.

Hey man if your free bring it by the shop here in stockton.
Or if you can pop the cover and see to make sure it's not a broken spider gear which can get serious if you drive it.
More than likely a borken clutch.

were you going around a corner when you got on it? if so thats what broke your rearend, getting on it while taking a corner puts massive strain on the rearend gears and they sometimes break.

So I took the cover off today... One of the bolts to the ring gear had come out, another was on it's way out, and a few more were also loose...

Someone doesn't know how to install gears correctly.
