I may have found a source for AFR heads at a decent price. I am thinking of rebuilding my engine--boring it .030 over to make it a 306. I have heard that 165s are best for the 302 or 306 but I am tempted to get 185s because they are not that much more and I may want to upgrade later [Wink] . (I realize that I will have to either have the pistons notched or buy notched pistons with the 185s). With the right cam and intake, will the 185s work as well (if not better than) the 165s? What cam and intake would work best with either if I wanted to remain smog legal? I was thinking either the Holley Systemax II intake or the Edelbrock Performer. Any opinions? Thanks [patriot]

Those heads will work fine. Either intake will work, if you go Elelbrock get the RPM intake. The heads will work better if you at least go with 9.5:1 compression. Try the TFS stage 1 cam with 1.7 rockers.

The car will have less bottom end power with the 2.02 intake head. They should only be run with an aggressive camshaft on a 302, a motor built to rev or with a power adder. Otherwise I'd stick with a 1.90 intake head

Here's what I'd do:
AFR185
RPM intake
X303 for a smog motor. (no notching needed when you use aftermarket pistons with good sized valve reliefs)
XE274 or custom (read: LARGE & NASTY!) for more power.

You'll have PLENTY of low-midrange with the 185's. The cross-section is smaller then TW heads & how many of those do you see around making tons of midrange TQ? (Fasterdamnit even has hogged out TW's & has a VERY nice TQ curve)
