Wondering if my clutch is about to go out. When I press in the cluth while the car is in gear or not, I get a high whining noise coming from the car. My clutch plate isn't slipping yet, but I do have 139k miles on the car and it's the original clutch. How do you know when your clutch is starting to go out?

Sounds like a bad throwout bearing

What does it take to replace a throwout bearing? If I have to break into the transmission, should I just go ahead and replace the clutch too, given how many miles are on the car?

Well the throwout bearing sits outside of the tranny but to replace it the transmission has to be removed so yes this would be a good time to replace the clutch as well since you will already be in there. I'd suggest having a qualified ear listen to it though before you go tearing it apart. From what you've told me about the noise it is likely this is it but without actually hearing it first hand it's tough to say for sure. Items in the transmission itself can make noises which sound similar

Is the throwout bearing something I'll have to change out right away, or can I let it slide? Basically, if I don't change it out right now, will it cause any other damage to the transmission?
