I had the same problem with my '91 mustang. The light comes on when I accelerate and it goes off when I let go of the gas. But I fixed it when I toyed with the TV valve (throttle valve) adjuster. I followed the Haynes Repair Manual for Mustangs my year and it's on page 7B-2 to 7B-3 read the instructions carefully. I adjusted it and bamm!! A day or two later "check engine" light is now in the off position. By the way, it only works for Automatic transmissions.
