You can check to see that it has the proper automatic tranny fluid in it. Should be red in color. Check the input shaft for play and make sure it spins freely thoughout all gears. Other than that you are taking the sellers word on it without having the tranny opened up. In this case I would suggest an arrangement where the seller returns your money if the tranny is faulty upon fire up. I always consider the seller as one and also what type of use the tranny has seen. What kind of power has been put through it.
