Honestly theres not a whole lot you can do but take the persons word. You can check to see that it has the proper automatic tranny fluid in it. Should be red in color. Check the input shaft for play and make sure it spins freely thoughout all gears. Other than that you are taking the sellers word on it without having the tranny opened up. In this case I would suggest an arrangement where the seller returns your money if the tranny is faulty upon fire up. I always consider the seller as one and also what type of use the tranny has seen. What kind of power has been put through it. You can ask how often the seller changed fluid but again you are taking their word on things

Also, put the tranny in all 5 gears and spin the input shaft and make sure the output shaft spins in all gears. Also feel for roughness/grainyness. Check the throwout bearing retainer shaft for excessive wear or ridges- (the thing the throwout bearing slides on.) The year of the tranny is stampped on the side usually in a little round circle type thing [ May 04, 2004, 09:36 PM: Message edited by: 89saleen ]
