OK, so the reason my car wouldnlt start had to be the most expensive item the starter so i have a new starter and it is in the car starts. BUT the starter continues to run, the person that put in the starter said they dont know how to fix that.
can this be a fuse? or how does this work?

basically i need to fix it becasue the car is not drivable unless i start the car and pull the starter relay.

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid...

Make sure the battery cable is not touching the "S" on the solenoid terminal...The only other options is a bad ignition switch...

I just spoke to the guy that diagnosted the problem. he said there is a short between the clutch(____) switch and the starter relay. But he wasnts $425 to fix this. first that is a lot of money, but does this sound right? what do you recommend? I work to pay for my car and school, so i am strapped for cash most of the time. But i also need my car, so any ideas?

thanks

Honestly from what you said about this shop I wouldn't want to take the car back there. Was the starter they put in new or remanufactured? I think I would go to Kragens, get another starter to swap in and see if that fixes it. If not just return it back to kragen's. Or just bench test it to see if it is sticking

My car did that same thing a few weeks ago, I changed the starter and the starter solenoid and it fixed the problem. I hope you at least try these things before dishing out 5 bills to that guy that lied to you to fix something thats not the problem

Just my two cents.

The starter is good. the ignition switch is new.
and the car will start with the clutch not even in position. And as i stated before the starter continues to run unless i pull the starter relay from under the hood.
any other ideas?
anyone know of an free online manual like hayes or chilton?
any help is appriciated
thanks, J

We are refering to the solenoid on the starter itself. If its bad sometimes it will stick open keeping the starter clutch engaged on the flywheel. A bench test will show you this

I had the same problem, and bought a new starter. Turned out to be a bad starter solenoid ($30).

Starter Relay on the driver's side fender!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes, the relay gets hot and the contacts inside weld themselves together(has happened to me 3 times), just buy a new one(preferably motorcraft). I couldn't tell you what causes it, but it has happened to me a few times and I finally cracked one open to find that the contacts in the relay were melted together!! It happened about 3 months after the first time and I went and got another relay(traded it as a defect) and it happened again a month later, so I traded it again on a Motorcraft one and haven't had the problem in 2 years! Still would like to know why it ws getting so hot though [Frown]
