there's some resistance when in gear, but it creaks like shit's gonna break. is this normal?

Have someone put their foot on the brakes while you do it. It will creep until the brakes and tranny lock.

If it's a stick and it's in gear the clutch is probably slipping slightly...
I always use a socket and a wrench on the crank bolt and then disconnect the coil wire and put a braker bar on the wrench so it's hitting the ground...Then just crank the engine over and the starter will act like an impact gun ...I wouldn't recommend this to someone who doesn't know what they're doing though...

lol. I think I've done that on accident but don't want to talk about it.
otherwise, this is one of the many applications for air tools

the creaking is usually the rear wheels turning against the parking brake (if you have it set)
put her in 5th gear and wrench it.
if you can back the car up when you torque on that bolt when it's in 5th w/ the e-brake on, you are the strongest man alive, and should be unscrewing it with your bare fingers.
if you make the clutch slip... I think you need a new clutch! if it can't handle 200 ft/lb of torque (you and your breaker bar) then something is wrong.

Hey, I've done it with a brand new king Cobra clutch, but I used a 1 ton jack under the wrench...hehe...
You'd be suprised how many jobs (properly and NOT half assed)I've done with the small tool set I have....
Mike, I've used that method on a number of Mustangs and I've never had a problem with starters....

damn.... i just use a breaker bar everytime (sometimes with an extra pole/bar on it for leverage), just hit it a few times real hard/quick with the palm of your hand. works for me everytime. sounds like some of you really go to the limit to break that bolt. easiest way is to just use an airgun.

well, it wasn't for me, i wasn't even there. shiftygt can't drive his car for at least 2 months, probably more, so we decided to completely strip the engine and then send the block to grow up i think he put it in gear and got it loose. if i was there i probably woulda thought of the breaker bar thing, but since i wasn't, i was at a loss. thanks for the suggestions guys. oh, and sal, heres a for your post
