The distributor gear has maybe 6 of the 17 teeth which used to reside there. Looked down the hole and the cam gear seems to be fine. Heres the problem: I've sheared the roll pin, which holds the gear on, off a half dozen times over the last two years. Each time it was several hundred miles from the last time. Now I've completely de-toothed the gear, but the roll pin is fine. The distributor is factory equipment, the gear is also factory cast, the cam is a comp cams 280H. When I installed the cam I also installed new timeing chain. I drove the car everyday for a year and never experienced this problem, it's only been since after I installed the cam. Whats going on? Is there a thrust bearing of some sort I'm missing. Is there some sort of back lash occurring when I let of the throttle causeing the shearing off and destroyed teeth? I've contacted Comp cams help line and I repeatedly get the "Let me check, I'll call you right back." line followed by no call back. Any help would be appreciated- Thanks Jesse

I'm assuming this is a 5.0, right?
Next time you put your dist. back in with a new gear, put some white grease on the teeth and check to see the wear pattern...
Sounds like a bad cam.....
Maybe 93Pony will grace us with his presence, he might know...

Make sure you are using the right gear on the distributor for the cam. Some cams require a billet gear to keep from getting chewed up. Call the cam company or MSD and ask about your combo

if a solid cam use iron gear if hyd roller cam use steel gear msd makes both of them and sumitt sells them

Thanks for the input. However, the stripped teeth on the gear isn't the only problem. Like I've said, this is the first time the gear was jacked but I've sheared the roll pin, holding the gear on to the distributor shaft, off several times. A steel gear won't help that. By the way, the motor is a 351 Cleveland.

have you put a new gear on becauuse when you do the gear is not completely drilled for the roll pin when you get the gear on where it lines up with other whole you half to drill through the other side of the gear then put roll pin on
