Considering buying a Cougar this weekend, and I was just curious if anyone's done a 4-speed conversion and how much work it involves. Will just a regular Mustang top-loader 4-speed work with the 351C block or what?

I'm helping my buddy swap out his automatic for a T-56 in his '65 'stang. It's pretty similar. Items you'll need include:
1. Transmission w/ shifter & bellhousing (351C is a SB pattern) 2. Pedal assmebly (any '67-'73 ford or merc. compact or midsize will work. i.e. maverick, comet, falcon, mustang, cougar, fairlane) 3. 4-spd tranny crossmember (can be found in the same cars as listed above) 4. Depending on what tranny you have in there (since it's a 351, i'm guessing an FMX) you'll need a new yolk and driveshaft (if it's a C4 I think it's the same yolk and the correct length DS for a T10, but not a toploader) 5. All the clutch linkages (you'll need to make sure you get the equalizer bar for a 351C as the windsor blocks are a little different) 6. New speedo cable w/correct gear. 7. Clutch w/fork, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing.
Then just take everything out, and put everything in. It's pretty straight forward.
And yes, a toploader out of a mustang will work. They're pretty expensive, you'd be better off looking for a T10, or even think about swapping in a T5 (T5 will require some more parts though). [ December 17, 2003, 06:55 PM: Message edited by: wilit ]
