I paid $200 for my 351 core (its a 70 block), and another $1800 for the stroker kit (scat crank/rods and probe pistons) and assembly including machining for the dogbones and spider. 2 grand for basically the Keith Craft 393 Econo-Stroker shortblock is pretty good in my opinion.

ya every single v8 engine built before the 90's had flat tappet... even those muscle car things that made over 450 horsepower back in the 70's

so you're saying that an '89 5.0 was flat-tappet as well?

351 roller blocks from I learned are somewhat rare. you would either have to go aftermarket which is expensive, or find one from a late model bronco, saleen, etc. etc. there is absolutely nothing wrong with flat tappet valvetrains -they are very reliable, relatively inexpensive, and if they are hydraulic -very low mainetenance. roller lifters are reusable, and generally speaking, they usually put out better results. and yes they are reliable as well. if you go roller -go solid.

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES GUYS. THIS IS AN EVERYDAY DRIVER SO RELIABLITY IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE. IS A FLAT TAPPET MORE EXPENSIVE TO BUILD? OR WOULD A ROLLER?

hydraulic flat tappet = cheap as fuck!
they are equally reliable for a daily driver. naturally a roller setup is superior performance wise, and more expensive, but you can get a cam and lifter kit from summit for under $80. and they work just fine and are very reliable.

'69 is the year to get for the 351. I almost bought a cougar (non running) simply because it had a 351. should have bought it in hindsight (very cheap, non running)

no. make sure you get the right distributor gear. there are already several posts in the tech section that address distributor gear choice. [ October 16, 2003, 12:14 PM: Message edited by: Chosen1 ]

Yes it is already assembled. I dont know about the quality, but for less than $800, you have a 351 shortblock. If something goes wrong you already have a block, crank, and pistons. My buddy bought a similar 351 from Larry's Performance in Montabello for $900, put some GT40's on it and went mid-high 13's in a 69 Mach 1. Just give them a call.
