Does any body know what the rules are for tail pipes?
I'm thinking of putting turn downs on after the mufflers. My car has the full Griggs and there just isn't much room for 2 1/2" tailpipes to go over the rear axle and around the panhard bar. The result is that they always end up rattling. Sick of my car sounding like a hoopdie.

As far as I know, the tips have to go over the axle and point down...
Its a good question...I always thought side exhaust was illegal(obviously not, IE~ 00 R, Lightnings, etc)...I would like to know the exact law on exhaust exits on a Mustang or any car too ![[patriot]](graemlins/patriot.gif) ...

I am running full Griggs on my 95 with 3" and magnaflow mufflers with turn downs, I am not sure if they are illegal, but some places will not crawl under the car for the sniffer test and will not pass it visually.

as for smog you can do what ever after the cats,hell you could run no mufflers and it would pass.Thats what i understand..
Now is it legal? smog legal yes.db level no.

I got my 93 smogged with turndowns no problem,just did it in april.They never said a thing about them.

Thanks for all the responses.
For those of you with turn downs, did it make your car much louder. I have shorties, X-pipe with cats and 2 chamber flows. It is pretty loud already.

As with allot of things regarding smog checks, it has allot to do with who's doing the smog. When doing a dyno smog, it is the operators choice whether or not to run your car, he doesnt have to accept your business. By law, if something happens to your car on the dyno its his responsibility not yours. I wouldnt smog a vehicle with turndowns because the probe could fall out and could get caught in the rollers. You might be able to find a shop that will take your car but it will be allot easier if you run them out the back. Hope this helps.

I have an x-pipe w/hi-flo converters,2chambers and turndowns.It will give your car a much deeper,rumbly,musclecar kind of tone.And when you floor it,it sounds mean!Even with the converters my car is real loud,i love it. ![[burnout]](graemlins/burnout.gif)

And on that topic,i had to go to a smog shop with an above ground dyno,places with in-ground wouldnt do it.
