what would be the best CAM for my car.
1990 Mustang 5.0,basic bolt ons.future mods consists of edelbrok intake,edelbrock heads.what CAM would fit best.

For all-out power, notch the pistons & install a Comp cams 286H. For smogability either the XE266HR mentioned above, or the X303. All with 1.6's.

Sean what is the lift on the XE286? I was looking at their site and couldn't find it. Would that be a good cam with my setup?

That cam is bad-ass any way you slice it. Here are the specs: 230/230 110LSA .598/.598 with 1.6's
It comes 4 degrees advanced. Depending on the heads used I'd retard it 4-6 degrees. Yes, it'll make tons of power with your setup.....but there's one that's better for the AFR's if you're interested.

Will that Cam pass smog? and when your talking 1.6 are you talking about the lift?

which one is that shaun? I will most likely stick with the 165's. I also called Coast High and they said the biggest cam I can go on the pisotns without notching was a 580* lift. [ July 18, 2003, 12:29 PM: Message edited by: Glenn ]

Thanx that's what I was trying to ask, I have the 1.6 rollers, but I was also told if you go with a e303 you might have to change to the 1.7

Glen: That cam is Comp part #35-450-8 & is $239 from Summit but is a special order only. That very cam just came to my door today. I ordered it on 6/26.
Coast High doesn't know what their talking about. Peak lift has nothing to do with Piston to Valve clearance. It has to do with overlap & ramp-rate. This cam has 10 degrees of overlap at .050 & has the fastest Magnum lobes Comp makes....just slightly less aggressive then the XE line. This cam would fit on a stock shortblock when ~.050 inches is notched out of the pistons. If the Coast high pistons are at least that much deeper then the stock valve reliefs, it should work. Depends on the depth of the valves in the heads too....

actually generally speaking the exhaust valve is the one to watch out for, as unlike the intake valve, the piston is 'running into it' while it's hanging open.
lift is a variable, as is duration and more importantly when the damn exhaust valve is going to close. It's popular and cool to say that lift is not a factor, but that would be incorrect.

Yes, the X is a good cam when installed correctly. It will not fit without piston notching if installed 'dot-to-dot'.
Shadetree: You may want to do some more research.
Saying that peak lift can not be over .xxx with these heads/pistons is just plain ignorant. The vavle is NEVER at peak lift when the piston is at TDC. The ONLY time the valves are open when the piston is at TDC is in the overlap cycle of the cam. The exhaust lobe will be closing & & the intake valve will be opening. Following me? Increase the overlap & the exhaust is staying open longer & the intake is opening sooner. Peak lift hasn't changed....but Piston to Valve clearance sure has! The same is true when you decrease the overlap with the same lobes.
Lift is a by-product of duration & ramp-rate (bell-curve). When a specific ramp-rate is used, all the lobes using that ramp-rate design will peak higher as the .006/.050 duration increases. I view peak lift as a tool to use when calculating valvespring pressures & coil bind clearance.
I've taken carefull measurements of just how large a cam can fit in a given combo....& make cams that will fit accordingly. When YOU find that peak lift has a major impact on piston to valve clearance please...let me know. I'd love to hear it. [ July 18, 2003, 02:47 PM: Message edited by: 93PONY ]

call me ignorant, it's a simple matter of position. a higher lift (depending on other variables) will put it that much closer to the piston.
go ahead and call me ignorant all you want, wouldn't be anything new, and wouldn't be any more true.

230/230 110LSA Order it from summit. Or Ed Curtis...either can get.
