depends what your looking to spend, if you are in the market for something basic your options are larger. But if you are looking to spend alot of money and build a top notch motor I wouldn't go anywhere local.

I just want a reliable motor to handle around 450Rwhp on the street, then if i take it to the track i would up the boost and run around 600rwhp with a single turbo. So i was thinking a 331 with an R302 block - shortblock. I can do the heads and everything i just need the shortblock built.

r302/a4-331,turbo?
thats like 6-7 g'sno more like 8-9 g's
you'll need a bullet proof c4 w/3500 stall
thats also a very high maintanace engine
you be messing with.my friend runs
331 r302,c4,331 gears,20pd novi renagde blower
trickflow ported heads and intake...custom cam by f&r performance in tustin

currently running mid low 9's
but always him and i are always pulling plugs, checking fuel pressure...one time
him and his buddy went to irwindales 1/8
the the vacuum line came of the fuel p reg.
making us lose compression in #1,7#8 cyl.
turn out we droped a few valves..this is a new motor mind you.

just my point high maintanane..

we also have to bust out with the generator to get the bastard running...+ the expensive racing gas it burns..about a gallon per 1/8 mile..

it gets expensive fast

nice, youll be happy with thier work.

As far as engines go, call up some race shops around, see if one will stand behind thier work with a turbo going on it.

I had my 331 built by Keith Craft racing
My next motor (when I need another) will also come from them.
Top notch service and also the builders of many NHRA Stock and Super stock record holders [Wink]

Bayshore Racing Engines (415) 647-9575 in SF will build you anything you want. Just tell them you're overall goal.
I strongly suggest a local shop so if there are any problems with the motor you can just take it back and have them fix the problems. I have a friend who has had nothing but horror stories from CHP. You will always hear bad things about places because no one is perfect but if they're local, it can be fixed quickly and it's always nice to talk to the person building the engine face to face.
The main reason I suggest them is because they do ALL the work in house. Nothing gets sent out (unless your crank needs to be turned).

Mike-
I can build you a nice short block. I would recommend R302 or sportsman with clearances setup for a dedicated turbo motor. You can not build a turbo short block like you would a naturally aspirated short block (this is where some of the old school engine builders that I've met have made mistakes). Piston to wall clearances are different, ring gap clearances are different, deck height has to be checked. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you want a solid foundation, everything has to be within tollerance for a nice turbo motor. I wouldn't go with the cobra intake, you do not need dual pumps, I've gone low 10's with a single pump (Norman Chang has gone 7's with one pump!) Do realize that the R302 block has to be fully machined, that will cost some extra $$. Stroking is optional, turbos make so much torque it'll feel like a 500ci motor with the 302. I have a R302 block myself, but I'm going to run the stock block (main support) that I built into the 9's. It's held up great so far. It's all in the tuning. You do need a dedicated fuel system with sump tank (I do sump fuel tanks). You need 50lb injectors minimum. Who ever builds your motor should be local so if you have any problems you can bring it back & it can be taken care of (make sure they know turbo motors). I've had some engine builders tell me there's no difference [Roll Eyes] (that's not true). I've been building performance motors for a long time and I stand behind my work. [Smile]
