A good place to start when diagnosing a "surge" like you are describing would be to check your TP sensor voltage, MAF voltage, and make sure your DPFE is at spec. Also, remove the MAF sensor from the housing and inspect it, check for dirt and dust on the elements. If they are dirty CAREFULLY clean them off with the torn edge of a piece of paper. Otherwise you would need a high end scan tool like a Snap-on Scanner or a NGS to watch your TP, MAF, and DPFE voltage. Checking for continuous codes wouldnt hurt either, it might give you a place to start.
