I need some good infomation here guys. My girlfriend has a BONE STOCK 1965 coupe, 289 with a C-4 I believe. It is a great car but hasn't been touched in 260,000 miles and 38 years. It was her grandpa's and she wants to restore it. It still drives but the motor is very tired, and the breaks (4 wheel drum) suck. I am sure the tranny could use a rebuild too.
So where do I go? Who rebuilds 289s for a good price? Where do I go for tranny work, rear end...ect. Also where are the best parts places for things like a disc break conversion and other parts I am going to need. She has saved a good amount of money and wants to have it reliable and safe. I am going to do some of the work myself but obviously rebuilding a motor and tranny is out of my league. Any shops/phone #'s would be great.

If it's BONE STOCK, you may want to think about keeping it that way. Or, at least rebuilding it to stock specifications. Disc brakes are great, but totally original Mustangs are getting rare.

I am thinking about that is it really pretty. All black pony interior, everything looks perfect and is in mint shape. It just needs to be freshened up under the hood. I am considering keeping it stock but she really wants to drive it everyday and I would feel a lot better with at least disk breaks in front. That car scares me when it comes to stopping.

keep your old parts in the shed, I'd put SN-95 brakes on it if it were me [Big Grin]

also I'd put the 289 in the shed and replace it with a 302 converted to carb from a latemodel hydraulic roller of some vintage (say '85 +)

Well,
It gives you ideas, at least. More than one way to...

[Big Grin]

I can't find our old Granada front disk swap for early Mustangs article. Might have been missed in the migration. You can get the front disks w/ spindles from a late 70's 302 Granada and bolt them up. I got spindles from the junkyard and everything else new or rebuilt from Autozone (including mastercylinder.) Just haven't had the chance to do the swap.

Check the entire car over when its apart regardless. Also, I would strongly suggest you paint the underside of the car to prevent any future rust problems. Also, the rear shock upper supports will probably be cracked so drill the end of the crack out and fill in the rest with a weld. If you need any info let me know Ive done a few of the older mustangs so I know them fairly well.

I have a rebuilt 289 you can have if you want. Sitting in my garage taking up space. Pulled it out of my perfectly good running 65 fastback to make room for the 5.0 Stroker. 925 679 2314

Just a thought but what about dropping in a DOHC 4.6? Probably not in the budget and it would be a custom job....but I think that would be pretty damn cool [burnout]

The car is too stock and is so all original that I want to keep it that way. This was on the show room floor when her grandpa bought it she is the second owner due to his passing. It's TOO perfect.
