Ok so I'm tired of messin around with shady stereo install places tellin me it is going to cost 50-75 bucks to install the deck just because of the line level converter. I'd do the shit myself, but I couldn't take out the stock cd player for the life of me.
Any local folks who want to come over and crack some cold ones (of your choice) and help me out? Or if you want to charge me a fair price, that is cool too. Just basically need to pull the stock POS out and put in an Alpine head unit to the stock Mach 460 system (yeah I know it sucks ass, but its only temporary while I gather cash up to replace everything with quality gear.) I'm in Campbell/San Jose. [ January 17, 2008, 06:25 PM: Message edited by: 94Blackout ]

If you cannot do this yourself I am sorry to say that maybe you should sell your car!! All jokes aside, I know everyone has to start somewhere on the learning curve so get the right adapter from the local stereo shop that will plug into the back of the alpine and then will plug into the factory harness. Drive by any stereo shop and ask them to use there special tool to pull your headunit out. Just pull it out an inch or two until you get home but that way the locks are undone. Pull out the deck and disconnect the plug, take the alpine and the new pug and plug it in. Then slide the deck in locking it into place. Very basic. If you go to like a Circuit City or something and drive to the install and ask the guy if he will unlock the clips on the factory stereo have the aftermarket one with you and the plug and I bet he will throw it in in under one minute for nothing!! Good luck!

I got the head unit out.... but I hooked up the head unit and no sound! There is power going to the head unit because it turns on. However, absolutely no sound. I connected the 8 prong plug that was in back of the radio into the harness going into the line converter, and then hooked up 2 of the speaker wires from the alpine to the converter and no sound. Here are the pictures, notice in two of the pictures I am holding a black wire that is on both sides of the converter. Am I missing something?

OK SCRATCH THAT. Turns out that the guy who installed the head unit when I put it in my Cobra, accidentally pulled the factory amp power wire out. I just had to run over and get a new harness real quick.
Anyone know where to get one of those little pockets that fills in the gap where the cd player used to be?

you don't need connectors. You need a soldering iron and a multi-meter

I prefer the butt connectors. too much can go wrong in a car with a soldering iron! Also make sure theres enough light!!

Thanks for the link! Also, that was not my finished completion of the job.. I had simply twisted the wires so I could check if there was any sound. I fhinished it off with butt connectors.

Of course man! Meet at Rock Bottom Brewery in Campbell tomorrow at 9. Me and the buddies always go every Wednesday, after 9pm the pints are only $2. They have one right now called Redemption Ale that is 8.7%.

Yup everything is in and working beautifully. It is amazing what a good head unit will do to the Mach 460 system! It is an Alpine 7800 series head unit that is 60x4. Sounds pretty damn good, better than what I expected.
