Tremec Transmissions Service Bulletin 03.01
Subject: Aftermarket Shifter Stops
Transmission Models Affected: All
Severe damage may be caused by installing an aftermarket shifter with "shift stops" on any TREMEC transmission. All TREMEC transmissions are designed and manufactured with built-in shift stops to prevent over shifting. Therefore; shift stops on aftermarket shifters are totally unnecessary when used on a TREMEC transmission. TREMEC "TR series" transmissions have multiple shift rails with shift stops on the gearing. TREMEC "T series" transmissions have a single shift rail system with stops built into the guide plate.
When installing an aftermarket shifter on a TREMEC transmission it is best to remove the shift stops to avoid miss adjustment, and the potential of the screws vibrating lose. A misadjusted shift stop can cause an under-shift, which may lead to a gear jump-out situation. If the transmission jumps out of gear, the shift fork can be bent causing permanent damage to the transmission. Shift forks can also be damaged by "clash shifting". A clash is caused by a missed shift.
Neither an "under-shift", nor a "clash shift" can be prevented by shift stops. TREMEC shift forks are designed to take loads up to 1,000 lbs. However, a gear jump-out may well exceed 1,000 lbs. of force, which may result in a permanently damaged transmission.

So, Dos this apply to the Brog Warner T5Z now mfr'ed by Tremec?
The instructions that came w/ my B&M Ripper shifter said the stops have been determined to be unecessary after extensive testing- but I still set them. And I have had my shifer base plate come loose before. Hmmmm.

this is true for any Tremec transmission, actually. Make sure you adjust the stops nice and 'deep' if you know what I mean.

Doesn't matter If you know how to adjust your stops correctly then you have nothing to worry about. But yes too tight of a shift stop can cause wear and damage. The way I rip second off I would like to have an extra stop there. (ya feel me!!)

I had my aftermarket shifter adjusted to there specs and blew my tranny. I doubt it had anything to do with the shifter. To many power shifts probably. But to be on the safe side with the new tranny I made my shift stops deep

Do you think it went out because of the shifter, or too much power? Did you ever re-adjust the stops after you bought the car?

So whats everyones opinion on this? Pull the shifter? Pull the stops? Leave as is? I dont like the idea of not having shifter stops. They say they have built in stops, but im sure they arent as strong as the ones on the shifter.

People are breaking trans because of a few reasons, over adjusted stops, power shifting, and missing shifts. Adjust your stops correctly and drive your car and forget it. I don't care what trans you have or what shifter you have or where you set your stops. If you beat your car up and power shift, miss gears, ect your gona have problems.
Leave the stops!!! All the shifter companies don't design them to waist time and money. There on there for a reason.

Just use some common sense, and don't set the stops too far. Just go by the advice the instructions tell you...pull out the screw so you can slide a credit card in between the bolt, and the handle. Just make sure you can do it in all gears...it's that simple.
