Just got off the phone with a machine shop who said he can do either a 306, 327, or a 331 for $500 labor, that includes boring, honing, cleaning, decking and assembly. I was originally going to do the 306, but for $200 more the 331 is sounding real nice right now. What I want to know, is if this will be a mismatch with the 165's?

It doesn't make sense that the stroker costs the same because the crank is more $$$$.

I'm thinking about getting the DSS 331 Kit which is like $1100, their 306 kit is $900, that was the $200 diffenece I was talking about. The machinist said he would do it for the same price, just bring him the kit.

the smaller intake valve might hold u back but not by much, if the pics works i will show u a flow table for afr 165 vs trickflow tw head, these are from fordmuscle.com

Oh, I get it now. It comes down to if you plan a power adder down the line. If so, you can always make up the extra cubes with more boost or spray. If you're sticking NA, more cubes(331) will give you more power at lower RPM's vs the same top half of the motor on a smaller displacement motor(302).

The added stroke will lower the powerband of the motor. By ~350-400rpm which normally means more torque ~the same HP peaks....but at lower RPM's.

I'd recomend 185s & a larger cam. [Razz]

I'd like to see high-ports on a 351, a 750 double-pumper carb and a vic-jr. intake. With something like a comp cam 282-HR (mild with that many cubes) you're talking ~425 rwhp box stock parts and 10:1 compression. But Byron can't tune it, lol, have to hit the chevy shop.

Swap to EFI (TFS-R intake?) and probably lose 10-20 HP but hey you might be able to pass smog with a cam swap, that's a plus.

I think you take to take all the combos you've thought/asked about, write them down on pieces of paper, mix them up and then pick one randomly out of a hat. [Razz]

For the price, I would go for the 331 (as a matter of fact, I already did [Wink] )
AFR 165's, TFS stage 2 cam AND GT-40 intake [Razz] worked VERY well on my 331. Ran a best of 12.36 @ 110 on Nittos in my 3650+lb 'vert
In a 3100-3200lb car it would have EASILY ran in the 11's
The extra low end torque provided by the stroker and extra velocity provided from the 165's intake runners and 1.90 intake valves made for a pretty potent street combo
If you already have the 165's, don't let that hold you back !!!
I had bought my 165's for my stock short block but developed an oil pressure problem (read: rod knock) and bought the stroker. I had the same worries/concerns that you are having, but just said f*ck it and put the 165's on
I would say stroke it. You won't be disappointed !!!

What are the specs on the XE274? You could always go with a cam from Ed, or Brian @ Hitech. Depends on the money you want to spend

Those specs aren't very far off from a TFS stage 2 cam

One word of warning, When AFR states that the maximum rec. lift is .550 THEY MEAN IT
I broke 2 exhaust valve springs on my 165s with the .563 lift of the TFS cam
Do yourself a favor and upgrade the springs before you install the heads. Ed Curtis sells a really nice set of springs good for upto .600 lift that don't require longer valves or any machining. I think the springs and seals (which are smaller to fit inside the new springs) cost me $120?

While the 050" specs are close, the XE will have more duration at .200" as they have more aggressive ramp rates. The TFS cams are decent (Crane,) but IMO the XE's are better.

Jim isn't that the cam Rhett runs in his car? He has a 342 and 185's though. It looks to me if it is the same cam it works pretty dang well.
