How fast can I go in my 96 Cobra before aerodynamics will put me in danger?? I have the griggs setup if it matters. [ May 15, 2003, 12:27 PM: Message edited by: Blown Mystic ]

It's always an issue.
I don't think your question is very clear.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here (heavy sarcasm), but you aren't doin 175 in your car.
If you want to be hypothetical, there wouldn't be enough lift at 175 mph with the shape of a Mustang to take flight unless you hit a large bump to act as a ramp. Even then you wouldn't be "flying", it would just be physics.
I guess what I'm gettin at is don't worry about it.
edit: Those F1 kart racers are the only cars that aerodynamically speaking are able to simply "fly" becasue of excessive undercarriage lift. [ May 15, 2003, 12:49 PM: Message edited by: 94Blackout ]

the rear end of a mustang can get very light at speed--- I guess I'd take it to Watkins Glen and get a few laps in and work your way up, you'll feel it if there's any problems.
and his car has enough power to push past 175 FYI.

Well I before I saw that you have a Vortech, I was going to say you can't hit 175.
At those speeds you would want to keep air out from under the car and improve down force. This is the reason the 00R has the splitter and the big wing. Will it flip? I dunno. Who can say. The problem is that it costs BIG $$$ to wind tunnel test at those speeds and as far as I know nobody has done it with the 94-98 Mustang. Ford may have with the 00R but I'm not even sure about that, probably just did computer modeling or some such thing.
I have often wondered if a Saleen front and rear would help with high speeds. There was a guy John Buscuma (spelling?) that was trying to hit 200+ in the Silver State. He had a web site with a lot of pictures which showed some of the areo mods he had made. MM&FF or 5.0 did an article too a year or 2 ago.

Even with a blower, 175 seems a bit high to be hittin on a track. But all the more power if you want to try.
Obviously handling will be an issue at that speed, but only side to side; having the front end flip up on you would be VERY hard to do. I'd worry about roll more than lift.

Im pretty sure I could get it up to around 180mph, but I'm just not sure how stable/safe it is. I wish I had the money to put a front splitter on. The reason Im asking (I wish I could afford silver state races) is Ill be going down I5 and was hoping to hit a few open miles. I probably wont go past 160 for now, untill I get an aftermarket speedo

Well, good luck brother. The best stretch is 90 miles before the Grapevine, in Kerns county. Flattest grounds, but also best for gettin a crosswind. Drive safe!

Hey this is off topic a bit, but what have you done to your suspension and how much money did it run you? was it worth it for you? I been thinking that after i finish this 65' im going to make a gr350 or a nice open track car.

Well, to answer your question, anything past 120mph your gonna need a lot of extra down force...I'm talking from experience...
I've taken my car to around 160mph...5,000rpm+ in 5th gear with 3.55's.....
My car was extremely light!...At top speed it required A LOT of steering input just to change lanes...
Front chin spoiler's are to direct air around the car and keep it from getting air underneath the car...If you get air under the car its NOT going to flip , its gonna lose grip with the road and probably make you loose traction like you would in the rain only your going a lot faster ...
The rear wing/spoiler holds the car down and gives a lot of downforce to the car....The '00 Cobra R Spoiler add over 200lbs of downforce at only 120mph(So I've heard).....
Basically your car will be extremely light at 175mph....Whatever downforce you can add will be great....
[QUOTE]((94Blackout)): Those F1 kart racers are the only cars that aerodynamically speaking are able to simply "fly" becasue of excessive undercarriage lift.[END QUOTE]
-What are you talking about? :rolleyes:First of all F1 and CART are 2 different types of cars..Second of all, (FACT):Did you know that an F1 car, hypothetically, has enough down force to hold itself to the roof of a tunnel at only 120mph!! ...Any car going fast enough and gets enough air under it is goin to take flight...I've seen it in Nascar, F1, Cart, Indy, and especially the LeMans cars... The likelyhood of you taking off like an Indy car (the clip od Andretti taking fligt in testing not to long ago) Is slim to none. The biggest problem is getting light in the back end. When this happens you lose traction and can get "a bit squirrely". When this happens you disrupt the air flow over the car. With the air flow messed up you lose what down force you had. Now you have it now you don't, next thing you know your sideways and its all over. All of this happens in a split second.

My bad, thought F1 and Cart were the same circuit, I don't really follow that type of racing. Point is though, I was under the assumption that he was just talking about having the car "flip" up and fly like you see on those F1 and Lemans races. Those cars are the only ones that have the aerodynamics to lift off like that. Because of the amount of downforce those cars have, it takes just a little bit of air to send it airborne. I've never seen a NASCAR one do it, however I don't watch enough to catch a rare occurence like that.

i dont know abotu fliping, but getting sideways would make me nervous. ive gone 157mph in my stock body 92 lx with out any problems. that car was also stock minus an off road h-pipe so i bet he could hit 175mph easily.

The AI guy's at Cal speedway are hitting those speeds. So yes going 175mph can happen but I would say lift is not a problom. Just keep the air from under the car and use a spoiler that realy works. I have a Guney lip on my stock 90 GT spoiler and it seems to help at 135-140mph. Front of the car uses a Ranger lower air dame to keep air from under the car. It real smooth at higher speeds.

LOL you keep talking about going in 157 in a stock fox body. Yet where's the proof? What other person has gone a *VERIFIED* 157 in a STOCK 5.0, much less even 150. You do know that stock speedos aren't always correct, right? You should also know that changing gears also messes it up.
