I just raced an older 60's Style Stang in Fremont (Good race whoever it was) and maybe like 10-15 minutes later I noticed my stock temp gauge dropped really low. And now it will no longer move past the first bar above 130??

What the heck is going on? Did my thermostat take a crap and is stuck open or could it be a bad temp sensor or something wrong with the gauge cluster? I'm leaning more towards the busted and stuck open thermostat. Do you guys have any idea? Thanks! [Confused]

even with a stuck open therm it will still heat up after a while. One tool all fhould have is a auto thermomiter. Juts un-cap the rad and stick it in(no lube required) this will tell you what your water is.

They do make "Fail safe" thermostats, which when they brake they brake open so that your car will not get you stranded by overheating...So its most likely your T-stat...

If you take the 1 wire that goes to you temp sender (the one for the gauge) and ground it, it will make your gauge move up/down...That way you can tell if its the gauge...Dont ground the gauge for no more than a full sweep or you will damage it...

If your gauge and T-stat are ok then it might be the gauge sender itself....

What color Stang did you race in Fremont?

You can also use a thermometer to see if your guage is reading correctly.

What color Stang did you race in Fremont?

The stang I raced was a dark color, bluish I think. He had a cowl hood and A-pillar gauges with what looked like retreads out back.

As for my temp, I parked the car at my friends house and left it off for a few hours....then when I turned it back on to head home it looked like it was working okay....it started all the way below the bottom line of 130 and when I got on the freeway it went up above 130 and back to that first line again and then no higher?? It was a COLD ass night and I was cruising on the freeway but still nothing....all the way back to SJ the temp never went above that line?
So could it be the thermostat....because the gauge did move a little. Also I notice that when I shut the car off the temp gauge shoots all the way up to the top....but I'm pretty sure it used to do that before too. Is that normal? [Confused]

OK Temp guage lesson for everyone. The thermostat if stuck open the car would still run at temp it would just take longer to warm up. THAT IS ALL. YOur car was and still maybe low on coolant. When you "race" the engine low on coolant/water the guage will get uncovered (no water on it) this will causae the guage to read "Cold". Check your Coolant/water level.
