Are they worth the investment?
I'm looking to chip my truck and it seems like I can just go buy a programmer and tune it myself for the same price it would cost to have somebody else do it...
I've seen two for the Lightning, one by superchip and one by Hypertech. Does anybody have any experience with either of them? Are they so difficult to program that I'd be better off buying pre-burned chip?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

I bought a Hypertech III for my '96 Tahoe with a 350. On the G-tech it picked up 0.1 consistently 0-60 (7.7 from 7.8) It's not to hard to launch a 5000 LB truck in 4HI so I believe it's legit.
However, it's a gimmick, I bought it on ebay for $120 though, and removing the speed limiter alone was worth it (factory 100 mph= gay)

hey shadetree, i dont know what ur tahoe looks like but if it is lifted i wouldnt go much faster than 100 if u have a lift and super swampers, i had bfg's and i hit the trucks limit at about 130, but with my old swampers (they were even the radials), they will start to throw nobs off at about 125, they heat up and actual fall apart, i have swampers again and dont go over 90 to make sure i am safe, i will drive quick as hell in the cobra but the truck just shouldnt be taken that fast on my swampers is says in small lettering (hard to see, but it is there) DO NOT EXCEED 75MPH OR TIRE FAILURE MAY OCCURE, that is definetley scary

Nah mines basically a stock 4WD height, I cranked the torsion bars up to make it another 0.5" higher but only I would notice, lol. The BFG KO All-terrains are rated at 118, I don't believe I have the aerodynamics nor the HP to exceed that, but my factory limiter was 100, which to me was very annoying...

Never buy a pre-burned un-programable chip. Those are bad 90's fads that just don't seem to completely die out.

Have you all heard about the chip set up that has three settings. My friend just ordered one for his 99. The first setting is to stock spec's so it will smog and the next two are up to what you want them to program in for you. His second is set for hi-po street and therd is full drag. It changes all the fuel curves and timing , speed limites. Ah just found it it is called "Deltachip" by Diablosport. My friends run this in their ford power strokes and their chips are 0, 75hp and 150hp gains. WWW.diablosport.com

If you have a bunch of mods done (blower, cam, etc), then more than likely the stock tune will not pass smog. That's why you take the car and have it dyno tuned. If you have a chip that has multiple programs and can be burned, you can burn a smog program, hypo street, and drag tune. I like the option of programming anything you want with the EEC-Tuner or Tweeker.

I agree, a unit like andersons PMS or FAST would be a wise investment, especially if you are considering major upgrades, or just want to tune your vehicle the best it can be!
