I don't think there are restrictions on anything after the muffler, but then again, a smog guy can fail you because of your body odor if he really wants to.

if the smog guy is a dick he can fail u for not having tail pipe, for some reason u legaly have to have ur exhaust exit on the out side of ur vehicle, i have never seen any one fail for this but it is a law and can be selectively enforced
i know cobraman says no but a buddy of my dads used to have a smog shop, and he is the one who told me this, i said used to because he got caught for doin illegal smogs about 2 months ago, sucks for me, but i think i know another guy [ March 02, 2003, 11:12 PM: Message edited by: 66 AC COBRA ]

Tailpipes are not illegal per se but, the tech shouldnt have to lift or go under the car to perform the smog(at least thats how the rule is written. I think the tech may have been a bit lazy but I also think it would be tough to argue to the referee that he is in the wrong, one of those grey areas I guess. I think you have to be pretty brave and a little stupid these days to do illegal smogs(at least for the tech). Overlooking visual stuff is just fines and some dings on your record but clean piping(entering your car but putting the probe up another car) is jail time now. I can see it now, "what you in for?"..."uh, illegal smogs." [ March 03, 2003, 06:04 PM: Message edited by: Jimbo ]
