what effect do catalytic converters have on performance? I have read that removing cats on a near-stock engine will result in a loss of torque but what about a mildly modified engine with longtubes?
Is smog the only deciding factor?

No matter what a cat will restrict exhaust flow. If you can swap shorty h-pipes every 2 years, which is NOT hard, then you will be fine.

I think on a stock motor cats are stealing about 5 HP (assuming they are in good condition).
Plugged cats can be quite the performance detriment!
as far as torque goes, I think that's a bunch of crap. I don't see torque gains from having corks in your exhaust.

Swapping H pipes every 2 years isn't so bad, but swapping long tubes off and on in a 72 hour period was kinda a pain in the ass Two years from now, I'm going to try and sneak the long tubes through the system.
