I recently installed the engine back into my 91 mustang. This morning I started the car for only the second time.
And I have some problems, I have ticking sound on the drivers side AND smoke, near the #7 plug.
The timing is set at 10 degrees, the plugs are right, the exhaust is bolted up tight.
BUT a bigger problem is that coolant is coming out of the passenger side muffler..
I'm at a loss here.. Here are pics of what referring to. You can't see that white smoke in the engine bay but its there.

Blown head gasket and if you did take your heads off when you pulled the motor it sounds like you didnt torque the heads down enough.

Well the reason I removed the engine was because I didn't install the lower intake gasket correctly and water found its way into the oil.
Took out the engine to make sure the internals weren't damaged. Didn't mess with the heads at all. That's why I'm at a loss.

I had same prob... when I rebuilt my motor, sounds liek to me your intake gaskets are not seated correctly.. Is there water in your oil??? Its weird how it works nobody could ever explain it to me.. I had no water in my oil but I had water comming out my exhaust. I had to break it back down and do it again its a pain.. But deffinately take it back apart, as for water in your oil run a quart of tranny fluid with your normal oil for about 2 days then change it. the tranny fluid really cleans the insides of you motor.. Some old man told me that when I did the sam thing to mine... Hope this helps!!!

could the ticking be a bad header gasket seal?

tear it down again brow. either your intake gasket is leaking coolant into the lifter valley or the headgasket has a problem. if you're 100% sure only cylinder #7 is leaking coolant it's probably the headgasket. If it's coming out a number of cylinders it's probably the intake gasket. I've had both problems. Don't run it like that whatever you do.
edit: some 'out there' possibilities are a cracked head or block but I really doubt it. I'd say prove it's not a gasket first. [ December 09, 2002, 02:24 PM: Message edited by: shade-tree ]

Isn't that too much water for it to be a blown gasket though?
Still haven't checked to see if I have water in the oil again.
I going to replace the intake gasket and I'm crossing my fingers thats it..
Most likey I will end up tearing it down this weekend....
