im gathering info for rebuilding my engine. i would like to do most of the work myself, but i don't have the knowledge, tools, or confidence to complete a rebuild by myself. so ive been calling machine shops asking how much rebuilt engines would cost me. ive been qouted 1350-1950. ive only called 2 people so far. i think 2000 is way to much. if anyone knows a good machine shop, that isn't a rip off, let me know. thanks -kevin

try bayshore engine rebuilders in SF. i dont know how much it'll cost but they do great work.
if you're just looking for cheap machine work then call up a dude named Pete Novi (i think that's how it's spelled, it's pronounced Naw Vee). he does real crappy work and it's SUUUUPPPER cheap, just like the quality. send him a painted block to be hot tanked... you'll get it back with all the paint still on it... but it's cheap.

Anyone know what exactly the rebuilders do to your engines? Like what do they replace or rebuild? Any websites?

bayshore engine in san francisco is not cheap we do good work there, and i am sure you were not quoted that much for a stock motor either buddy, it was probably a different cam, little port work on the heads, 0 deck the block, and a few other little things... i would like to see the summit engine run with the bayshore engine....you get what you pay for......

when we build an engine it depends on what you want to do to it, a stock rebuild is same crank, just polish the journals, stock rods, just resize the hole, same stock rod bolts, new cast pistons with pins, new cam, new lifters, bore your block out .030 -.060 depends how bad it is.resurface the heads, cut the seats, grind the valves, new timing chain, same pushrods, unless they are bent.... hope this helps

onelowsplitbumper-can you give qoutes online, or do i need to call. im very illiterate(sp) when it comes to knowing what i would like done.
basically this as far as i know: new gaskets through out new oil pump new oil pump driveshaft (hardened, or something strong) new timing chain new rings new bearings new lifters have the heads freshened (springs, valves, seats, etc.) stock spec cam, retarded 4° maybe zero deck the block this is as far as my knowledge goes.
oh. and one thing i saw. you said the same stock rod bolts. im by no means even a novice at engine building, but aren't these bolts that you would definatly want to replace? if you can't qoute publicly, feel free to email me. thanks.

everything you are asking for is included, the zero deck is a performance mod....well worth the extra money, scavenges alot of exhaust gases more effeciently, YES you would want to replace the rod bolts on any kind of performance engine, most of the things i was saying earlier were you typical stockers, any time you want to go fast you should upgrade the rods bolts, forged or hyperutectic pistons at least, and a mild cam.... i personally am really big on changing the stock main cap bolts and head bolts, but that is just me personally. the stock ones do work just fine, but for less than a hundred dollars you have piece of mind.

the shop is bayshore engine rebuilders. they're in san francisco. they dont let onelowsplitbumper do any more work for them because he is too skinny. dave the owner told me it was like 1,800 or 1,900 for a completely stock rebuild but i'm not sure if that was for a shortblock or a long block. their phone # is 1 415 647 9575, they're open till like 7pm or later sometimes.

sounds like Bay Shore is a good shop and does a good, honest job from what I just read. That seems pretty thourough for a basic rebuild.
We do it too at Bad Ass Racing Engines and we do it well! We aren't cheap, but as onelowsplitbumpr said, you get what you pay for. Check out our PRODUCTS and ENGINES pages at www.BadAsscars.com for prices and combo's. Everybody does their own thing and remember, a cheap rebuild is a cheap engine... is that all your car is worth to you?... cheap parts and mediocre machining? I doubt it.

right now, i would take a pack of bubble yum for my car.
and i do care about what goes into my car. but, i also need money for the small shit, cause i know that the small shit is gonna kill me in the end.
i was joking about the first statement. if anyone buys me a pack of bubble yum, prepare to have it crammed somewhere.
