I know my car pings like a motherfucker, but what exactly is going on in the engine when it is pinging? And what damage does pinging do to your engine? I know I learned this in auto but I can't remember. Thanks.

u need to either adjust your timing or get bigger injectors/fuel pump or both.. u could blow your headgasket if you got a supercharger

I know if you don't run enough octane your shit will ping like a motherfucker and mine does it when it's hot outside not neccesarilly the engine. What is that shit all about?

While I could get really technical on this but I will try to keep it short and sweet .Basically pinging is caused by early detenation of the Air fuel mixture .This can be cause d by many things such as bad gas ,heavy load ,running lean or excessive heat .(along with I am sure a bunch of other things I am forgetting ).Basically it means your car is not running correctly and if it is occurring on a constant basis it may indicate a deeper problem .If I were you I would have it checked out because pinging can lead to serious damage to the engine .

Oh yeah thats right but did you check your timing? Those 94 95's confuse me, I always forget they have those 302 push rod motors.

I got it fixed and told the guy to set the timing at 10, and that's what he said he did but now it pings even more

try retarding the timing 2-4 degrees, and definately switch to a higher octane gas. the after market octane boosters can help because some contain cooling additives. pinging should not happen at low rpms. it usually happens at WOT, so until you solve the problem stay off the pedal.

I've heard the SN-95 5.0 computers just have pinging problems, plain and simple. But that's all second hand information.
Pinging= pre-ignition. Reverse of 'dieseling'.

Pinging is also caused by bad spark plugs right?

I think it might be. We just set my timing at 10 and took it for a test drive and it didn't ping in 2nd but when it got to about 4300 rpm's in 3rd it started pinging. Then we wnt and changed the plugs, autolite 24's, and on the way home it didn't ping, I don't know though. Either way I still need to get it tuned.

Pinging (pre-detonation) is the A/F mixture igniting before the sparkplug fires. The ignition trys to force the piston down, but the crank forces it up, causing the piston to rattle in the bore. That's what you're hearing...the piston rattling in the bore.

isn't it when your piston hits your valves also called pinging?
