This may sound like a stupid question and I'm sorry if it is, but how many cams do I have in my motor, and there is a ticking in the engine bay and someone had told me that either my heads need to be replaced or my cams, I can't remember which. And does anyone have a pic of a E303 cam cuz I might be picking one up this weekend for like 140 bucks is that a reasonable price?

I think you've got about 16 lifters that are pretty good at ticking
1 cam, that actuates all those lifters, and if it "ticks", you're pretty much fucked
rockers are another source of potential ticking, but both lifters and rockers are less likely to "tick" than an exhaust leak.

You only have one cam, the newer GT's have 2 and the newer cobra's have 4. If the cam is used I don't think $140 is worth it, they are $189 brand new.

I'm sorry, they are $164 brand new, and I would go with an exhaust leak as that ticking like shade-tree said. [ October 03, 2002, 02:42 PM: Message edited by: 5.8L 2be ]

So what do you think I need to replace then? Do I just need to replace that one cam? And the e303 cam is brand new for 140. Do you think it's time to sell the car or is that an easy repair? Errr help me out please cuz I need to know what needs to be replaced. Do I need to replace the lifters how much is that gonna cost? Like I said am I better of selling the car?

dude, if you read between the lines in what I said, I believe you have an exhaust leak.
replacing the rockers is as easy as removing the valve covers, but the lifters would require that you have the upper/lower intake off as well. Your lifters and rockers are most likely fine.
the "tick" sound is from your exhaust, I'd put $20 on it (header/block seal or header/collector area)

oh hmmm, well the ticking is coming from the engine bay, it's not coming from exhaust I don't think. When I rev the engine it will tick, when I turn the car on it will tick, after a certain point however it will stop ticking....

Don't you mean 2 valves per cylinder for the GT and 4 valves per cylinder for the Cobra. And SOHC=single over head cam...DOHC=Dual over head cam... ????

Did you make sure that your new rockers clear your valve covers? I think if you have the stock valve covers you may be running into clearance problems

The ticking is noticeable, it's not really loud, but you can definetly hear it. And it doesn't happen all of the time either.

The cost of a gasket set and magnetic tappet holders if you do it yourself.

i bet the ticking is an exhuast leak you probably blew a header gasket or something
Edit: BY the way i did my e303 cam myself its very easy and the gaskets aren't more than 30 bucks i believe from Monument car parts. Although my 5.0 is in my Jeep and i have about a foot of room on all sides of my motor except the back of it. So it might be harder to do in a lower mustang. Also i can tear my entire front end off in about 15 minutes radiator and all. [ October 06, 2002, 10:46 PM: Message edited by: Cobra-Jeep ]

No offense or anything, but if you cant figure out the difference between a lifter tick or an exhaust leak, I dont think you should even consider swapping a cam...

I had some ticking before and it was a spark plug wire that was lose. It wasn't plug all the way in on the spark plug.
