When you blow a head gasket does it make any kind of noise and do they always leak. I have come to the conclusion that it is not my exhaust making this fucking ticking noise that is drivin me up the damn wall. (excuse me I am little unhappy [Mad] right now) This ticking noise is coming from the upper backside of the engine on the passenger side. I just thought maybe it might be my head gasket however I am not leaking anything. So maybe thats not it.

Its beyond me [Confused]

Thanks

When you Blow a head gasket your car will run like shit. White smoke from the exhaust, oil in radiator or a bunch of bubbles when car is on. Also car will overheat.

Try checking all your spark plug wiers. Does the car run different ever since that ticking started?

hey,
i gotta 89 gt and it ticks to in the passenger side rear back of the motor.
i don't think its a head gasket because water and white smoke will come out the mufflers, oil will be white, and one or two of the cylinders would load up with water.
i think my car has a bad lifter,or weak valve springs.. you can find out where the noise is comming from if you put a screw driver on the head and listen through the handle for it.
stock heads suck..wish i could buy something better..no $ [Frown]

That ticking noise is most likely your headER gasket..not the head gasket. Try tightening them down first. Also, are you running thin paper gaskets? That's your problem then...

Oh, also...not all blown head gaskets give you white exhaust, poor performance, etc...if it is leaking to the outside of the head (not into a cylinder and not near a water jacket) you could have a blown gasket and not even really notice it. [Big Grin]

89hatchback_LX- I checked all the plug wires last night. That's not it. The only difference I notice is when I try to give a little gas the gas pedal is stiff. I am going to check the gasket on the TB/EGR today. Although I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Me too. One of these days as soon as I able to stop spending money on stupid little shit. Sometime I just feel like I spend more money on the pidley little things to keep in the car running right vs. being able to spend it on a new short block or heads.

JohnB- I am running the gasket that came with the headers. I wouldn't say that its all thin, but its nothing compared to a copper gasket or something of that sort. I went through and retightened everything last night.

After doing all of this the noise is still there, is just go louder and more consistent.

and you're sure it's not a header gasket? you re-tightened the header bolts after about 100 miles after you installed the headers? and you didn't use the cheap paper mr. gasket gaskets? fel-pro's are the only way to go...

I am not absolutely positive that it's not a header gasket. I am running a bbk header gasket or whatever comes with the headers. I will just go and get new header gaskets and TB/EGR gaskets and see if any of this doesn't change anything. Thanks for all of the help. [patriot]

Those stock headers gaskets bbk gives you are crap. Get a nice new copper gasket set man.

Its probably not an exhaust leak anyways. I bet you need to tighten down your rocker arms under those valve covers.

unfknblvble89--- I have the same minor tick in my 89 drop. I also have BBK shorties, with the big thick gasket! I have checked the exhaust system for leaks and there are none. So I am also trying to find this annoying little noise.

header gasket? ticking?...
look man ,its gotta be your head(s). this happens a lil' after 100K miles..113K is when it happend to me....
are you burning a lil' oil ?...not much you can do about it till you can afford to buy heads with all the assembly.$1500! or get a valve job for $300 not worth it unless you stang lets you down and you don't have much money.
if your running the stock h-pipe it could be the heat sheilds on the cats.

The noise is all gone. [Big Grin] I am a happy man. My car ate those damn gaskets that came with the headers. So yes it was the header gasket(s). It basically baked them, then they cracked. The one on the passenger (where the noise was coming from) cracked in about 6 different places. I have some better gaskets in there now. I still can't bring myself to spend 45 bucks for some gaskets, but I will eventually.

Everyone that said it was my header gasket. Thanks that is the only reason I checked.
