I just got my 83 5.0 started and finally idling decently at about 1000 rpm. My problem is my number 6 cylinder is heating up red hot. I can tell because just the header is dicolored coming out of that cylinder. It lit up my precat bright red. Anyone have any ideas. Maybe some kind of air leak. The plug looks fine.

Run a leak down test on the motor. You may have some valve problems going on there.

Could also be a hot spot on the piston if the rings are fried or warped on number 6.

It is a rebuilt motor. The leakdown test was done after assembly and everything checked out perfect. Could it be anything else?

How does it run?? Idle smoothly? May be a leaky injector, plugged injector, etc. do you have all the spark plug wires routed correctly?? Make sure youre using the right firing order ( i believe the older 5.0 used the 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8) Make sure youre not using the HO firing order (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8)

I have stock replacement ngk plugs for a 93 cobra. The car does not idle smoothly but it is carburated. I might have thought cooler plugs but only one cylinder runs hot. Could it be an air leak in the manifold?
