I'm looking at a 89 Saleen this weekend in the Sacto area.Besides the ground affects, badgeing/paint scheme is there anyway to tell a clone from the real thing??Do they have different vin #s than standard 5.0s?Any suggestions appreciated.

They do have a badge in the engine compartment as well as a little plaque above the shifter. Otherwise, just call Saleen with the vin to verify.

saleen.com
Post a topic asking for Liz's phone number and someone will give it to you real quick...everyone knows it but I forgot = (. She is in charge of Team Saleen and if you give her the vin she can tell you if it is real or not.
She is also very nice and very helpful.

Cmon guys!
Saleen's are numbered cars bro, look on the front bumper infront of the driverside head light, does it have a number? it's a decal. it should have a number.
other things on a saleen: 5-lug, 4 wheel discs, racecraft suspensionsticker in place of the 5.0 emblem, and yea it does have 2 riveted placards under the hood. they are located on the oposite side of the radiator but are kinda hard to see when the car is in one peice . Mine say "THIS UNIT IS NOT A GT". I'm tellin u, i was the happiest guy in the world when i found out my lx was a saleen... long story but yea...
anyway, hope this helped

but that can all be duplicated..the only way to be sure it is real is to CALL SALEEN WITH THE VIN.....I have heard a couple of stories of people buying fakes thinking they were the real thing. You can get the bumper # at any sticker shop and most of the other stuff needed you can get off ebay but the vin will tell the real story.

Like Adam says, get the Vin and call Liz @ Team Saleen to verify if the car is a real Saleen or not. If you want to do an on-site inspection, like everyone else says, check for the Saleen plaque on the center console (above the shifter), the Saleen plaque on the passenger side of the firewall, the Saleen bumper # below the driver's side headlamp. If the car has not been repainted and the body panels and doors are still intact, there will be a sticker inside the driver's side door that reads "This vehicle was alterted by Saleen Autosport and as such confirms to federal vehicle safety standards"......etc.). Also, to make sure that the engine firewall plaque belongs to the car and was not lifted off of another car, the six digits on the Vin# (not the production #) of the Saleen plaque should match the last six digits of the car's actual vin#. Hope this helps. [ July 28, 2002, 11:44 PM: Message edited by: saleenfan ]
