OK, don't flame me because I am asking a non-Mustang question, but since this is the same engine used in my Bronco (except for small differences), you guys may be able to help.
I have a 1986 Ford Full-Size Eddie Bauer Bronco. It has a 5.0L EFI V8 with
220,000 (not a Mass Air Flow type engine..those didn't come out until later). The engine runs strong and I take very good care of it. I replaced the timing chain about 50K ago with a heavy duty Edelbrock roller chain. I also replaced the low pressure pump in the tank about 2 years / 24K ago.
Tuesday I take the car out and about .5 miles after I left work, it dies. I start it and it
runs….for about 2-3 seconds, then sputters and dies. When I prime the fuel system
(turn key to on, off, on, off, on, off, etc….then start) it runs a little longer, then sputters
and dies. I had to have it towed home.
I had a new Fram high pressure fuel filter AND Fram low pressure fuel filter, so I replaced both of them. It did nothing (although the low pressure fuel filter was very dirty for only 30K…and no I never use Arco gas).
I used the method of forcing the fuel pump on (ground one of the connectors in the red
connector near the battery) and it runs a little longer (about 5-6 seconds) then
sputters and dies.
I just purchased a fuel pressure gauge and will check the pressure on the fuel rail
after work today (Wednesday). I am thinking high pressure fuel pump. It is the original pump. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like a Fuel Pump problem, go get your self a gauge and tell us what its doing

I noticed your comment about Arco gas. Have you heard it`s bad or what? Out of all the major brands my Supercharged Cobra runs best on Arco. I read a article in MM&FF and Arco was rated the highest.

I have my 5.0L set at 10 before TDC. Of course, it has some miles on it, so I have to use 89 octane or higher to keep it from pinging. If I use 89 octane from Chevron, 76, Mobil, or Shell, no problem. If I use 89 or 91 octane from Arco, it pings like crazy, and runs like crap. And this wasn't just one test at one station. I have tried it several times at several stations, same thing. And whenever I loan my mom my Bronco to pick up something (can't say no to mom) she would makes sure to returned the Bronco to me with a full tank........of Arco gas. Moms, you gotta love them. ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

Don't know if the Bronco's have them, but Mustangs have a fuel pump relay. The relay turns the pump on/off if you have the key in the accessory or on position (so the pump isn't running continously). I had the SAME problem with a 91 5.0 not too long ago. The car would start, then shut off. If I primed it, it would run a lil longer, but not for long. I'd check that. If there is a relay, jump the two power wires, you'll know if it's good or not when you attempt to start it.
