Heard a clinking sound under the car. Pulled the X-pipe off, tipped it upside down, and a bunch of white, cat material fell out. Does running the car rich or lean cause the cat to burn up? Thanks

A rich mixure makes the cats attempt to burn off the extra fuel in the converter and not in the combustion chamber where its suppose to burn. If extremely rich, they can start to glow.

Yeah like if u run 91 octane plus an octane booster it will run hella rich and eventually burn up all your cats and destroy them.

The way you drive your car doesn't help either sir....also a car not being fast can cause that...which is likely in your situation...J/K!!!!!

Eric,
How old is the Bassani? You *may* be able to coax Bassani into an exchange...your old one sent back with some $$$ in exchange for a new one.

*Precisely why I don't want a used one!*

Shaun - I bought them brand new off of some guy in Texas back in May. I'm gonna call Bassani and see what they will do.

Higher octane fuel wont make your car run richer.

It will effect the burn in the combustion chamber.

No stock EFI mustang without a power adder needs any octane boost if it is using 91 octane.

My impression of octane boost & the effects on cats:

Stock/lightly modded 5.0 running 91 octane: Runing rich will send unburned fuel out the exhaust. When it reaches the cats, it ignites causing damage to the cats.

Same car with octane boost (the stuff that actually works)... The higher the octane, the slower the burn of the mixture. Depending on many factors, this could send unburned fuel out the exhaust....to the cats & ignites causing damage.
